• Hi,

I’ve been using Drupal, Joomla, Zen-Cart and OSCommerce for my projects.

I’ve never used WordPress before, this is the first time somebody wants me to develop his blog website using WordPress. He will also be using an image and video gallery.

My apologies for comparing Drupal and WordPress on this Forum, I hope this is not offensive. I know that this product (WordPress) is the best in its class, its just that I’ve not used it so I’m afraid that will I be able to deliver something on a new platform in the limited time?

Drupal has a blog module and its Views and Custom Content Kit Modules make it extremely flexible and powerful.

My query is very simple, is there any reason I should not execute this in Drupal?

Again, not anything against WordPress, its my limited knowledge about blog websites and I’m trying to understand it.

    Kindly help.
    Thanks and Regards

yes, thats not what you were asked to do. and since thats WHAT youve been asked to do …

if you cant do it, tell the client so that they can find someone that can.

The fact is that limitations in wordpress stem from so-called self-identified developers who do NOT know what they are doing — not flaws in WP.

everyone thinks theyre a web dev these days.

Hey! this is not what I expected πŸ™‚ This is not what open source community does, discourage. Why so much anger? I asked it because if somebody has worked on both the platforms or has some idea that can save my time. Moreover I want to do it in WordPress, its just that I’ve limited time for this project. So what is the harm in asking?

I agree with Whoo, if you’re asked to use WP, just use WP. When you have experience with those other platforms, WP won’t be too hard for you. The only thing is that for a gallery/galleries you’re going to need plugins. Other than that, you should be able to have WP up and running with the famous 5 minute install.
Besides, when you master WP that’ll look good on your resumΓ©, won’t it? And perhaps you’ll even discover that WP exceeds those other platforms too πŸ™‚

If I am discouraging you from taking someone’s money for a job that you cant do, then Ive done them a favor, havent I?

2ndly, im not angry. Im disgruntled by the amount of inept, unskilled hacks that run around trying to cop money off people that dont any better.

You want assurance that you can do whatever it is that you have been tasked to do? Well I gave you THAT answer. Did you read it?

If you want a more specific answer than provide more specific questions.

Im not into kumbahyah, and frankly I dont care how encouraged you are, or arent.

money oriented Whoo! this is a free project for a friend of mine.
    anyways, thanks for the suggestion.

Gangleri, I think I didn’t ask the right question here.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Dear Whoo you said in your first reply

get off the moneytrain if you cant be an engineer.

I posted the same question on the Drupal Forum and this is the way people answer:

Broaden your thinking and knowledge Whoo.
    Good Luck

Nothing really, it’s up to you and your “friend” actually. If you can sell the Drupal way with him, good for you. Be honest with your friend and say you do not know how to install and configure WordPress according to what he wants. Then after installing Drupal for you friend, be prepared to be on call for technical support or tell him/her to use Drupal forums.

    iamopensource You have two choices.

    1) Use WordPress as the client asked.
    2) Don’t do what your client asked.

If you cannot do as the client asked, and they don’t like Drupal, then you may not get paid (depending on your contract).

An example: If your friend asks you to paint a wall tan and you paint it blue, because you don’t like tan, they have every right to be pissed at you.

Ask your friend why they want to use WordPress, explain that you can do this in Drupal. Remember that ‘I don’t like the interface’ is a perfectly valid reason NOT to use a product, and you shouldn’t strong arm someone into a specific software. You have to balance ‘Client is King’ and ‘Clients generally don’t know jack about tech things’, and it’s not easy. I’d just ask the dude, though, and start learning WordPress since, as a website designer, developer and supporter, it’s not a bad thing to add to your repertoire.

Thanks Ipstenu for the detailed suggestion. I think I’ll go with WordPress. It’s not the question of skill set, my concern was related to the development time. I’ve no problem designing a WordPress theme or installing additional plug-ins or even learning its code framework and writing a customized plug-in. I’ve been doing the same for Drupal and Joomla. I think I did not ask my question properly and that created the confusion. All I wanted to say that I can do WordPress but to save time should I use the platform I’m using since long? So considering the timeframe I just wanted to know is there anything for my requirement that should be avoided or considered. Thats it.

Thanks once again and no hard feelings guys, in my first post I said

To save yourself time? Almost never. πŸ™‚ If you have a hard and fast deadline, then maaaaybe, but only if you true-up with your client before hand. Lower their expectations.

Give WordPress a shot πŸ™‚ You’ll like it πŸ˜‰ Join the cult.
