What version of WP are you using?

I am running 1.2.1. I have been looking at the fix at IoZBlog but have not implemented it yet. I thought it was mainly for outgoing trackbacks, that I know are working.
Before WP I was using MT for my blog, and I get the impression that WordPress is just half done. Much of the basic functionality has to be implemented by plugins and code modifications. OK, the plugin function is great and works like a dream, but I had expected basic functions such as trackback in and out, display of trackback and recent comments on the main page, and a lot of other things, to work “out of the box”.
I like the program, but it feels more like a beta testing release to me.

As for what your expectations for WordPress are/were…can’t help you there.

Yes, WordPress is free and open source (community built).

Yes, and I am grateful for this, but much other open source software has a more “finished” feel to it.
