I recently moved server and installed Wordfence on a WP multisite virgin wordpress install.

The plugin works fine (I’ve used it on single sites before)… until I try to enable the firewall, and then my .htaccess file keeps being emptied (like, all the content is gone, it’s completely blank) or even just completely deleted. Obviously this breaks the site. Fixing it is easy enough (I keep a spare copy), but it keeps happening, on average once a day. This is very annoying.

If I disable the firewall it stops. But. No firewall.

    I’m tired of this.

    I have the following questions:

    1. Have you heard of this happening, and by remote chance, is there an easy fix or could I be doing something dumb?
    2. Do you know of firewall plugins that I can try in conjunction with Wordfence that are not going to clash horribly with it and if so, what options would I need to turn off in Wordfence?

  • Hey @pattyjansen,

I haven’t heard of this happening before. Whenever anything is written to the htaccess, the entire file is written over. So, what might be happening is that you’re running out of memory when the write happens.

Can you share your htaccess file in its entirety when this happens?

Can you also check your PHP error logs for any relevant errors? If you’re not sure where these are, your host can provide them to you.

    Please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

    Thanks for responding.

I’ve gone nuclear on this, deleted everything, reinstalled the plugin and set up the firewall again. I monitored my .htaccess very closely when I enabled it, noticed that that plugin wrote to it, but didn’t delete anything, and so far the problem hasn’t come back. It’s only been a day, so keeping my fingers crossed.

I did check the php logs prior to posting here, but I really don’t have the knowledge to spot the finer issues. I noticed no major errors. But eh, I’m an author not a wordpress developer.

Having some issues with Jetpack, but I think I’ll reinstall that, too.

    Hey @pattyjansen,

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’ve gone ahead and marked this thread as resolved.

Please feel free to open another thread if you’re still having issues with Wordfence.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald
