htaccess could not be written

I am experimenting with iThemes and Jetpack. Whenever I enable or disable XML-RPC, I get a green bar with “The settings saved successfully” plus a red bar with this message:

/home4/nealumph/public_html/.htaccess could not be written. This could be due to a permissions issue. Ensure that PHP runs as a user that has permission to write to this location.

What does this mean?

Hi,

Can you please navigate to Settings> Security> Global Settings> and make sure that Write to Files is enabled?

Affirmative: Write to Files is enabled.

I disabled Write to Files, saved settings, and re-enabled Write to Files and saved settings.

Then I disabled XML-RPC and the warning message is still there.

If you disable Jetpack, do you still get the same error? Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing?

I have deactivated ALL plugins except iThemes and still get the error message.

I do not know how to attach a screenshot on this platform.

If you are still having issues I would suggest reaching out to your host about the file owner/group permissions.

Had my host restore my XML-RPC permissions and the error message is gone!

Hi
you need to use a sample htaccess for your website.
remove your current htaccess file and copy new one.
your plugins or misconfiguration may caused that problem.
