• Hi – I’m having so much trouble with this, and I don’t know why!

    I’ve watched umpteen how-to videos – some say use the MySQL, others say use FileZilla.

    I use 1&1.com for my hosting. I have multiple domain names on my account. I created a SQL. It doesn’t specify which domain this is for (I’ve put in a question to 1&1 for this, fyi). So trying to use FileZilla – no go! I can’t get it to link to any of my domains.

    I’ve tried uploading the edited wp-config.php to MySQL – o go, states multiple errors in symbols/syntax. It doesn’t like the , or the ( or any of the extra words, etc.

    No where on WordPress instructions does it say to delete ay of the extraneous wording – but I tried deleting the things MySQL didn’t like – STILL not working.

    I’ve been at this for over 3 hours – this is SO not a 5 minute install – I have followed the steps – what am I doing wrong??

    Thanks…Dea

  • Dea drop me an email and I’ll set up for you – as a favour to a newbie ofcourse 🙂

    hi dea,
    i’ve just finished installing a number of blogs, and done so quickly on 1&1 after being stumped for a couple days by the seeming complexity of it all. what turned the corner for me was the following site:
    http://www.everydayiselectionday.com/2008/07/22/a-beginners-guide-to-installing-wordpress/
    this made the difference; i hope it helps you too.
    blessings,
    wes

    DOH – ok, did it, figured out what I was doing wronng re: FTP

    But now I tried to run the program, and here’s the error message I got:

    ERROR: %s’), $error); ?>

    checked=”checked” />

    ‘.__(‘Already Installed’).’

    ‘.__(‘You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.’).’
    ‘);} switch($step) { case 0: case 1: // in case people are directly linking to this display_header(); ?>

    ReadMe documentation at your leisure. Otherwise, just fill in the information below and you’ll be on your way to using the most extendable and powerful personal publishing platform in the world.’), ‘../readme.html’); ?>

    error) ) wp_die($wpdb->error->get_error_message()); display_header(); // Fill in the data we gathered $weblog_title = isset($_POST[‘weblog_title’]) ? stripslashes($_POST[‘weblog_title’]) : ”; $admin_email = isset($_POST[‘admin_email’]) ? stripslashes($_POST[‘admin_email’]) : ”; $public = isset($_POST[‘blog_public’]) ? (int) $_POST[‘blog_public’] : 0; // check e-mail address $error = false; if (empty($admin_email)) { // TODO: poka-yoke display_setup_form( __(‘you must provide an e-mail address.’) ); $error = true; } else if (!is_email($admin_email)) { // TODO: poka-yoke display_setup_form( __(‘that isn’t a valid e-mail address. E-mail addresses look like: username@example.com’) ); $error = true; } if ( $error === false ) { $wpdb->show_errors(); $result = wp_install($weblog_title, ‘admin’, $admin_email, $public); extract($result, EXTR_SKIP); ?>

    admin
    ‘. $password .’
    ‘; } echo ‘

    ‘. $password_message .’
    ‘; ?>

    Is there more I should have deleted from the wp_config_sample file? Every site with how-to says to change just the 4 things….

    I just thought of something – I’ve already published a blog through 1&1 using their WordPress “lite” function in the control panel – is THIS why I’m having all this trouble? Do I have to remove all my work up to this point?? 🙁
