• Hi, I am working with a client who wants me to help him with his website. This looks to be like a very old version of WordPress and I am not able to edit it properly. My questions are – Can I upgrade this version of wordpress to the current version? If not, can I migrate everything to a new updated wordpress site? What are my options here with this obsolete version of WordPress? I am scared to click the update button and have his site implode or something catastrophic. Thank you very much for your help!

    Yes and Yes.

Should you go for the Big Update? It’s only 4.4, so I think so, but make a full backup of the files and database first. If you’re more conservative than I, read this first: https://wordpress.org/support/article/upgrading-wordpress-extended-instructions/#upgrading-across-multiple-versions

Be sure you have both FTP and hosting control panel access, too.

The source of the page says version 4.4.12. That’s old, but not ancient.
You should be able to upgrade just fine, but if you prefer, you could install the WP Downgrade plugin and use it to upgrade in smaller steps, testing after each upgrade.
You will need PHP 5.6.20 at least, in order to upgrade to WordPress 5.2. Some of your plugins might need a higher version of PHP (but you can’t really tell until you update WP and check, although you can go look at each one individually).
