• Hello, a general question about how to size images. My website developer made me pages where I’m listing products (this way I get more control over order etc.) and he tells me that the size he put in for what Dreamweaver used to call ‘image placeholder’ is 275px wide x 320px high. How then do I size images to go into these spots so they are not stretched? Do I create all images 275 x 320 exactly? Can I do them 550 x 640 (same ratio but bigger size) or do I make the square, say, 390 x 390 (which all my existing images are) and just let WP do it’s thing? Also, do I set the image size in the dashboard as Custom or one of the pre-sets? I assume it’s custom but do I put in measurements of 275 and 320, or do I do it square of, say, 390 and 390? I’m asking this because I’m having some issues with stretched images so I want to check my basics to see if it solves the problem before I get more specific. The link listed here is to an example of one of my grouped pages. Thanks in advance.

  • Hello,

it sounds like your developer requests for a standard image size for all products. The best thing to do is using an image processor like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP to create those images. For quiker results, create a blank template exactly that size and try to fit in all images you have. Then, export each image in the format you need. It’s no use uploading larger or different ratio images as the theme will try to adapt them to the particular size and in most cases, they won’t look nice.

I do all my image editing in Photoshop so that’s no problem. But what size and what ratio? Do I need to make them all 275 x 320 (the size the developer made the box) or do I make them square? An what do I do with the image settings in dashboard? Do I go Custom size? If so, do I make the size 275 x 320 or 390 x 390? While I know the answer to these questions might seem obvious, I want to make sure I get all settings correct to eliminate the high-stretched images I’m getting on desktops and the wide-stretched images I’m getting on mobile screens. Thanks
