• Hello everyone. My desire is pretty simple. I currently have a wp install here ( http://www.leagueoflegends.cc ). It is in English. A friend wants to make essentially the same site (but with his own content) in German. I will create http://www.leagueoflegends.cc/de . I’d like to use the same theme across both. I’m no WP expert, but it seems to me that there are two ways to accomplish this:

    a) create a new wordpress and install it in /de . the issue here is that it’s another DB, more maintenance, and I don’t know how to share 1 theme across 2 wp installs in different directories. I don’t want to have to change the files of two themes each time I make a change.

    b) we both use the same wp install and his posts somehow get ‘routed’ to the /de page. his /de would use the same theme. this seems simpler, and I hope there’s a plugin that allows two wp’s on the same install.

thanks, and if you need me to explain further, I can.

as i consider it further, i’d really like to stick to option b, because if i start adding other languages, having a new wp install for each one will become more and more difficult to manage

You need to use WordPress Mu to have multiple blogs under one installtion:

    http://mu.wordpress.org/

Never used it myself but I think it enables you to make changes to your theme once and have all the blogs using that theme take effect. And I’m not a 100% on this but I don;t think your can edit themes in the backendof WordPress Mu – in which case you would have to edit them on your desktop and upload them to your theme’s directory each time you want to make a change.

There are a few plugins for translation though:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/global-translator/

Why not give that a try before translating your site for eachlanguage manuually.

I’m not looking to translate the site, it’s going to be a separate set of posts. The other guy, the german, will be running the content on his own.

    will check out mu, thanks

it looks like mu is a separate piece of software. i’d like to, if possible, just keep my current wordpress installation. hmm 🙁

looks like wp-hive may be what i’m looking for.

    although this ( http://wp-hive.com/forums/topic.php?id=106 ) is interesting:

While there is no official timeline for the merge yet, it appears that it is being targeted for the WP 3.0 release. Based on WP’s past release schedule, I’m going to take a guess and say that it will be within a year, but probably closer to 6 months. There is a very good chance that this version will effectively make WP Hive obsolete then.
