    Hi all,

I have just migrated my blog from wordpress.com to wordpress.org, using the same domain name. However, I have encountered a major problem which some of the links of my images are broken.

I have discovered that the problem is due to the date elements in the URL being changed after the files are imported from wordpress.com. For example, the original link of the “image1” file in my old blog is “myblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/image1.jpg”, but since the date is altered, it becomes “”myblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/image1.jpg” in my new blog, which such the link is broken. As the date is changed randomly, simple find and replace is not able to solve the problem.

I have done quite a lot of Googling but still not able to find a solution. I have like thousands of images in my media library so it is not possible to update the links manually.

I am a newbie to wordpress.org. Grateful for any thoughts on the matter. Thanks.

  • Same domain name, just a self-hosted server using the WP.org’s code…. correct?

If so, make sure you restored the backup correctly. I would copy the database over and files over to the new server again. It’s possible the backup was corrupt. I would contact WordPress.com and see if they can provide you a new copy of the backup.

Hope this helps. Once you find a solution please tag the thread as completed.

Thanks for your response. But the problem is that I could only export simple xml files from wordpress.com…

Have you already cancelled your wp.com account? If not you should be able to login over there and install a migration or backup plugin here are a couple I like.

    Hi Davood,

Unfortunately my wp.com account is just on personal plan, which I am not able to install any plugin in it, and that’s why I have switched to wp.org.

I am now checking on the broken links through a broken link detect plugin, and it seems that the situation is not that bad. I may just manually update the links later if there are no solutions find.

Unfortunately, it does not appear you will be able to get a backup then. Are you sure the domain name did not change? Can you provide me a link to the site. I know that the images wont load but I might be able to better assist you with a link to the site. Also, do the images show up okay within the media library section of your wp-admin?

if you still have the original xml file this plugin does the trick (as you said the domain name and the path must be the same as the destination site) https://wordpress.org/plugins/demomentsomtres-wp-export/

Note* if you have the xml file intact, you can delete the content on the destination site.
I would like to try a test with the plugin on a free account (different domain name and not in the same machine used for the new wordoress installation).
For wordpress 5.2 php requirements 5.6.20
Install a plugin that modifies the path in the database and checks if everything works.

If it works, don’t delete the xml file but delete wordpress in your free account and then install the plug-in in the new wordpress domain and this time without using plugins that modify the path since the domain is the same.

    Back-up https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
change of the path, change of the domain name or https or port different from that of the installation or new wordpress folder with further explanation in the use of plugins to modify the url in the database. https://wordpress.org/support/article/moving-wordpress/#changing-your-domain-name-and-urls the maximum correspondence from old to new domain is obtained without final slash example serch http://www.olddomain.com to http://www.newdomain.com.

Thank you for all your help. I have manually fixed all the broken links, it turns out that the process is not the painful!
