Saving pages never returns

    Hi

    I am running WordPress 5.1.1
    When I save a page or a blog post using the Gustenberg editor most of the time it shows its saving by the update button being greyed out and wont let you click it again, but it never returns. This makes it hard to make another change as it never returns and never lets you click it again unless you reload the page.
    I thought it was a problem with autosaving so tried turning that off but actually it happens with normal saving as well.
    Can someone help me work out why this is happening as the site is becoming unusable
