• Hello Community,

I have just installed and provisioned a wordpress.org website and wanting to hide the website from search engines and make it private whilst I am in development stages.

Essentially what I am after is, if they go to mywebsite.com (obviously an example url), I want a page to come up saying the website is under development or unavailable, so users do not see a half developed site.

I do recall seeing a private setting in wordpress.com, however I can’t seem to find it in wordpress.org

Thank you all, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Nathan.

    Hi Nathan,

What mariaukweb mentioned will help with search engine visibility. The under development part you can achieve with a plugin. There are quite a few available too: https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/under+construction/

There are many different under construction or maintenance mode plugins that will hide your site and give a maintenance mode page to any site visitor.

What you should actually think about is creating a separate site on a sub domain like, “staging.mysite.com” and then developer your site on the subdomain and push it to the Live site using the All in One WP Migration plugin.

Or, you can subscribe to a web host who actually offer dev, stating, and live environments on their plan. That way, if you have future updates, you won’t have to disable your site to make them in the future. You can just copy over your dev or staging site changes to live.
