Hi Kacper,
The sitemap can hold up to 50.000 links, or up to 10 MiB in size; whichever limit’s reached first. Whether it loads quickly or not doesn’t matter to the crawler. However, a large sitemap does strain your server.
So, your suggestion is a good one, and it’s feasible.
Please note that we need to create a sitemap index first. See the GitHub issue linked below for more information; there, I’ve also forwarded your suggestion.
Which default limit do you suggest, before pagination occurs? 5.000? 10.000?
I’d love to know at which number you consider your sitemap to be speedy again.

I would sugggest 5000 at most – the less strain on the server, the better 🙂
Thank you for considering my suggestion!
Thanks, Kacper! That gave me an idea: I think I’ll keep the current “limit” option, and I will convert that into a “posts per paginated sitemap” option, so users won’t have to readjust those settings when upgrading. 🙂
That’s great! 🙂 I’m looking forward to the update 🙂
