Adding script tag for analytics to template

I’m trying to add a JS tag to the template itself to trigger a Google Analytics event, however the JS call appears to render the output of the AJAX plugin invisible, even when escaped properly.
Is it possible to serve a script in the template or is there a better way to track the load/scroll event?
