Implementing user profiles/removing the clutter

Hey guys im new to wordpress.org ive been using it for almost a week now though im starting to find my way around everything. I downloaded the ultimate member plugin because i wanted to have a members area. The i set it up though it doesnt seem to be working properly. And i dont think thats it has anything to do with the plugin or that i did anything wrong. I think its because i need the user profiles themselves. But what kind of plugins would i need to have user profiles. You know how like if you login to facebook or twitter you have your own profile and you can see others profiles. Thats what i wanted to put on my website. Im creating a gaming website but i wanted people to be able to have their own profiles and have a section for members only. I can probably find it myself but i dont exactly know what it is that its called is it called like a social media plugin.
And also if you look at my site is there a way to remove the clutter on the right hand side of the pages to where it says like categories and meta and etc.
