WordPress Backend via API?

I’m researching a project to create a local backend, a bit like Calypso, but only handling posts/pages – and no need for wordpress.com connectivity. I’ve read tutorials on how to use WordPress as the backend and React as the frontend, but not about replacing the WP backend.

Any suggested sources of help?
