Comments in trash folder – no spam

    Hi there,

    I have a problem with comments in my WordPress. Very often new comments get directly to the trash – the problem: It is not trash or spam at all.

    I spam plugin is not installed. I had Antispambee active, but that is deleted. Also, I just have a blacklist auf suspicious words – but that does not apply to the rejected comments.

    What is WordPress doing wrong here and how can I fix it?

    Is there links in the comments? If yes, WP may thinks them as there is too many links.

    Some emails are marked as spam by default.

    It applies to 80% of my comments and several email addresses. All are private (mum, dad, friends…). So I think it wouldn‘t effect so much comments.

    You can set comments settings via https://your_site/wp-admin/options-discussion.php in your WP dashboard.

    Yes, but there is no setting that could cause that effect. I have no idea why wordpress is reacting so wrong here.

    Akismet can trash comments that it thinks are spam. Check those settings if you have Akismet enabled.

    Otherwise, no, it won’t put comments in the trash by default.

    no, Askimet isn’t enabled or installed, but comments are in trash nevertheless.

    Well, you have a plugin or something else putting them there. WordPress doesn’t have the ability to trash comments by itself.

    Do you have an extension in your browser that might be pre-loading links? Such that it’s the one clicking the trash link on comments without you knowing about it?

    Hi @otto42,

    I have no plugins installed that are handling spam, comments, etc. – if so, than it is a plugin that does something else.

    Other than that: No, there is no preloading extension.

    It is definitely something happening. It can’t happen by itself.

    So, you need to find the cause. Use a different browser, turn off the plugins, etc. Find the causative factor, and then we can find the solution.

    I agree. 🙂
    But I can’t find a WordPress setting, not I have a comments/spam plugin activated. So I‘m hoping someone has an idea for a solution.

    Unfortunately not – WordPress is still showing that behavior. I can’t find any cause, I guess it’s in the WordPress core.

    I would love to hear if you get to a solution. I didn’t. 🙁
