    Can people only start following you once you made a feedburner account?

    No. Feedburner is just a news aggregator. People can subscribe directly to your news feed via your blog.

    how do you find out if people are following your blog

    There are a number of ways in which you can record visits to your blog pages. You can also use Google to find out who is linking to your blog.

    I have a stats plugin…but is there a way to find out how many people have subsribed via rss feed?
