wc_format_phone_number removing () from around area code

We have css set to make our phone numbers pretty. We store them in the db as (888)-123-1234. The latest two updates made changes to wc_format_phone_number that use regex to remove anything but numbers instead of the original str replace of “.”. Is there a way I can fix this without having to alter the core function after every single update?
