I use three plugins for this:
1. Cookies for Comments – Uses a simple cookie-based approach to ensure that people sending comments to your site are sending them from your own comment form and are not spam bots bypassing the form. Very effective.
2. Simple Trackback Validation – Uses several simple approaches to eliminate bot-based trackback spam.
3. Akismet – Uses Akismet’s servers to check if a comment looks like spam or not. This is the catch-all solution, it catches what makes it through the other two.
The combination of these three is very good, plus they don’t add a significant amount of load to the site, unlike some other plugins do.
Thank you very much for your feedback.
Akismet want my API number and directs me to WordPress.com. How does this work if I have a WordPress.org account?

I’m starting to get a lot of spam comments on my blogging site and fortunately I have my settings set where I have to review comments before they posts.
I would like to cut back on all the spam comments I get (more spam then real comments) and I wanted to know which of the many spam plugins you recommend?
Thank you.
