Latest Update crashes my site

    I had to rollback to version 3.3.3 to get my website to even be workable. Once I update to any earlier version of Woocommerce and activate it, it takes down the entire site. I have to go into cpanel and delete the plugin entirely.

    Fine. But now my store is gone. I have no idea how to fix this, and get my store functional when I can’t update to the latest version, and I can’t seem to get into any of my store files to work on it.

    Caveat – I did not set up this website, I stepped in when the last person updated Woocommerce and crashed the site. So I have never interfaced with any of this before, and have to admit I am unimpressed with WordPress and Woocommerce in general, and wish I could bypass it completely and just integrate directly with square.

    Hi @kbrand01,

    Did you get any error notice when the update caused something to go wrong? The first thing I’d try from your system status is to get the PHP & MySQL versions updated. In particular for WooCommerce 3.4 + PHP should be 7.0 or higher. MySQL at 5.6 would be great as well.

    I semi suspect that the very out of date version of PHP may have caused the error in the first place, but it depends if your host has any logs from those updates gone wrong that could give us a hint. 🙂

    I guess there is an error, it takes me right to an error 500 screen, and I can no longer access the site, or login to wordpress. I have to ftp into my files, delete the entire woocommerce folder and then I can get back in. It’s a straight up fatal error, no warnings, as soon as I activate any version above 3.3.3, BOOM. Site is down.

    I have zero clue how to update PHP or MySQL, and have been looking for answers for hours.

    Hi @kbrand01,

    Ahh ok, a 500 error is a generic server error and doesn’t tell us people on the outside much at all. 🙂

    Hopefully, your host would have some sort of server log. If you ask nicely they may be able to give us some sort of clue there as well as update your versions of PHP and MySQL for you.

    Even though getting those updated will help your site immensely, it is weird that you say any version from 3.3.3 and above causes the issue. That would lead one to believe that whatever changed in 3.3.3 is causing the trouble. Looking at the changelog though I don’t see anything that stands out immediately.

    Have you tried temporarily switching to a theme like Twenty Seventeen and/or Storefront and then updating WooCommerce? I’d also only have WooCommerce active on the site and no other plugins active if you try this.

    It also sounds like a staging site would be a good idea. If your host doesn’t offer that option, we recommend WP Staging for quickly spinning up a new test site. There you could test updates that hopefully wouldn’t affect your live site.
