• My linking button on my toolbar has stopped working. I get a darkened screen like a window shade on my page, and everything freezes except for the back button on the browser window. The link menu appears where you type in your http, target, etc, but everything is frozen. When I do it by the long method in html, however, it does take the link. What is going on?

Should I reinstall WordPress? Will I lose everything? I’ll take whatever help anyone can offer, PLEASE!

  • Is this the Quicktag link button or are you using the visual editor?

I guess it’s the visual editor, the link button is on the toolbar when you’re writing post, which becomes operable when you highlight the word or phrase you want to link. As soon as I try to use the link button, the whole screen turns dim, like a darkened window shade, and everything freezes.

Actually that could still be either interface. Do you have popups disabled?

I tried blocking the pop-ups (Safari has it on their pull-down menu). It didn’t affect anything. Tried activating pop-ups again, but either way had no affect on the linking tool. It still turns the screen dark and freezes.

Never had this happen before upgrading to WordPress 2.7, but right now I don’t remember if it started happening as soon as I made the upgrade. I’m tempted to reinstall 2.7 again, but is this possible without losing everything? Plus I don’t know whether it will resolve anything.

You could try a re-install. Your content and theme shouldn’t be affected if you ensure that you don’t over-write the wp-content directory. But I’m still curious as to whether you’re using the Visual tab or the HTML tab. Both use javascript but pinning down whether both are affected or just one could go some way towards identifying the problem.

I have the same problem – definitely with the visual tab. I can see the window underneath the shade effect but it is not active. The link button works with the html tab bit the pop up window is different. It allows for inputting the url – however there is no way to determine Target, Title, Class etc as in the visual tab.
The exact same problem occurs with Word and plain text popups.

Heh. Seems like a Safari 4 beta problem. I reinstalled Version 3.2.1 (5525.27.1.
problem solved for me. Worked ok on Firefox too.
