I tried unchecking “allow people to post comments on the article” but it’s still allowing commenting. Is there anything else I can do short of downloading the stop comments plugin?

OK, it’s me again. I installed the stop comments plugin, but it turns off both comments and ALL POSTS? WTF kind of plugin is that? I want to stop commenting, not posting!
OK, this is seriously frustrating.
I temporarily disabled the >options> writing> update posts, deleted the pingomatic entry. This worked for me.

I tried disabling the Ping feature as well, but alas, it didn’t work–I put up a new post and the second it appeared it had a new spam in the comments.
I’m really at my wit’s end here: Does anyone know of a way to block comments from a specific e-mail address? (so far all the spams have come from different IPs but they all have the same e-mail address)
