• Hello,

I apologize if I am posting in the wrong spot.

I volunteer for a local non profit that has been having ongoing issues with editing their WP.

Long story short, the group that started their site no longer exists and they are having a hard time getting support to keep their website running.

I have experience as a WP editor but not as a developer so this deeper stuff is new to me but I get the basics of code and plug ins and am now doing a crash course.

I have been made a Admin by the one person who has access and has been admin in the past but is not longer able/willing to do anything with the site.

Basically where should I go from here? I am not sure where the site is hosted, do I need to get that information? I am not even sure who is paying for the domain and the current chairperson doesn’t either.

Do I need to install WP on my computer to fully run a site or if that process has done elsewhere is that necessary?

I am sorry I am so basic but I guess what I am looking for is a list of how to properly take over and what the items mean and why!

Thank you so much in advance.

    1. Get the hosting information. You’ll need access to the hosting control panel and FTP for full control of the site. Some things may require access via the host rather than the WP admin backend.

    2. No, you do not need to install anything on your computer.

    3. Yes, find out who’s paying for the hosting *and* the domain and how that payment is made. Make sure your email is added to the notices sent regarding hosting and the domain; otherwise, you could wake up one morning to find it’s all vanished due to an expired credit card or something similar. Use a “whois” service to get information about the domain. The name servers should give you a clue as to the host.

    4. Ensure that the site is backed up regularly in a way you understand and trust.

    Hello @benjamind2016

First of all, when you are taking over a WP site, you need to Grab the Source code and Database of the site.

Just to be on safer site download the complete source code and Database SQL File. You can get that via cPanel Or through FTP connection.

Once you have the source code safe with you, next I would suggest you change the WP-Admin details so that previously who was working could not edit it or make any changes.

Further, if you want to know the Domain/Hosting details you can use : https://www.whoishostingthis.com

Feel free to ask if you need any further details.

    Thanks.
