your database stores all of your info so backing up files does no good except for ones you modified
If you must re-install:
back up database
delete all files EXCEPT wp-config.php – .htaccess – /wp-content folder
upload files you saved – or better, grab a new download and upload those files
Do not upload the /wp-content folder and be careful not to mess with wp-config.php and .htaccess.
When all files are uploaded go to
/wp-admin/upgrade.php
in your browser. You likely don’t need an upgrade but this will verify your site is connecting to the db.
I tried deleting the files ou mentioned but apparently I do not have rights to.
Also, my dashboard looks entirely different than anything I’ve read a WordPress dashboard is supposed to look like.
My login screen has my host name (1 & 1) not wordpress. Once I log in the dashboard only has the following items:
Welcome to WordPress. 1&1 blog powered by wordpress. 2.2.1
Then the following headers: write, manage, comments, blogroll, presentation, plugins, users, options.
I have no tools, no theme editor. No navigation menu on the left side of the page
I believe I’ve found part of the problem. In my wp-config.php file I misspelled the db_host under **mysql hostname.
I have corrected that and uploaded the corrections to my webserver. However, is this closing the barn door after the horses are out?
p.s. – I do computer help desk for a living so i should have know better…..oh the shame 🙂
