Exclude custom taxonomy

Hello there,
I would like to exclude one custom taxonomy from the search results.

In the “select which categories to exclude” dialog on the Frontend options. Custom categories are not displayed.

My taxonomy is called: State
and the category I´d like to exclude is: “Former staff” (Keeping “Current staff” as the only ones that will be found.

Is there a way to do this?
