PHP/SQL for posting to WordPress

Details aside, I’m making a plugin to create a post automatically when something happens. I’ve been looking at the twitter-tools plugin as an example but it’s more complicated than I need and I’m getting lost in it.

Does anyone know of a bare-bones tutorial for creating a post via php? I only need to set the following fields:

Post Title
Post Content
Post Date
Status (Published)
