Description
Walk Score doesn’t cover Europe, so the Walk Score box in many property themes stays empty for a European listing. Walkably fills that gap. Each listing gets a walkability score from 0 to 100, free, with no account and no API key.
We build the score from OpenStreetMap data. Most of it (60%) measures how close eight daily needs, from groceries to public transport, are on foot. The rest (40%) rates the streets you walk along.
Covers 31 European countries.
- The score can appear inside the Walk Score box of Houzez, WP Residence or RealHomes once you turn that option on.
- In any other theme, the [walkably_score] shortcode places it where you want.
- Scores are saved in your own database, so a visitor opening a listing triggers no outside call.
- You can add a link to the listing’s spot on the Walkably map, and a short credit line that links to Walkably and OpenStreetMap.
We wrote the theme support from each theme’s published code. Before it fills a box, the plugin reads your theme’s files to check the box can be filled safely. If that check fails, the box is left to the theme and the shortcode keeps working.

External services
This plugin gets its scores from Walkably’s free service at https://mcp.walkably.org/mcp. It sends the latitude and longitude of each published listing, rounded to about 1 metre, with the plugin version in the request header. The service sees your server’s internet address, as with any web request.
Nothing is sent until you turn on “Get scores from mcp.walkably.org”. From then on, the plugin sends all published listings once, then any listing you save with a new map spot. It repeats each listing every 30 days. If a call fails, the plugin tries that listing again later. A site with many listings can take several days to get all its scores. If Walkably later has no score for a spot that had one, the plugin keeps the old score and removes it only if the answer repeats on later checks. Your visitors’ browsers never contact Walkably. A visitor reaches walkably.org only by clicking the map link, if you turn it on.

Installation
- Install and activate the plugin.
- Open Settings > Walkably and turn on “Get scores from mcp.walkably.org”.
- If you want the score in your theme’s box, also turn on “Show the score in my theme’s Walk Score box”. The settings page then tells you whether your theme is connected.
- Houzez needs two changes in Theme Options > Property Detail: enable Walkscore, and move the Walkscore block to the Enabled column of the Layout Manager. In WP Residence, put Walkscore in the Visible list of the property page layout under Theme Options > Property Page. Leave the theme’s Walk Score API key field empty in both: the plugin fills the field itself, only while it shows its own score. If the field already holds a key, the plugin doesn’t change it and doesn’t use it, so clear it yourself. In RealHomes, set the WalkScore section to Show under Property Detail Page.
- For any other theme, put the shortcode [walkably_score] in your listing template.
FAQ
-
What data is sent?
-
The map spot (latitude and longitude) of each published listing goes to mcp.walkably.org, never the address text. Like any web request, it also carries the plugin version and your server’s internet address, which we use only to keep the free service fair for everyone. We never receive owner names or anything about your visitors.
-
Which countries are covered?
-
31 countries: the UK, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria. In Spain the Canary Islands aren’t covered, and in France the regions outside Europe aren’t covered. A listing outside these areas, or without a map spot, gets no score. The shortcode then shows nothing, and the theme box shows one short line saying there is no score for this spot.
-
Does this slow my pages?
-
No. The plugin reads stored scores, and your visitors’ browsers never contact Walkably.
-
How often do scores update?
-
A score is refreshed every 30 days, and again within minutes when you save a listing with a new map spot.
-
Is the credit line required?
-
We ask you to turn it on. WordPress.org rules keep it off until you do, so the plugin cannot decide for you. The data licence of OpenStreetMap (the ODbL) asks for a credit next to the numbers, and a link to Walkably helps us keep the scores free. If you leave it off, name OpenStreetMap contributors once somewhere else on your site, for example on your about page, and name Walkably there too, with a link to walkably.org.
-
Can I show walking minutes to each daily need?
-
The plugin shows the overall score. Portals and feeds that want walking minutes or bulk scores can use the Walkably API at https://walkably.org/business/api/
-
I turned off or removed the plugin. What about the theme box?
-
If you ever typed text as the theme’s Walk Score key, clear it, or switch the theme’s Walk Score section off. Otherwise the theme shows its own Walk Score box again, which has no data for Europe and sends the listing’s address to walkscore.com from your visitors’ browsers. The same applies if you turn off the theme box option, or if the settings page says the box couldn’t be confirmed. In Houzez and WP Residence, with the key field empty, the theme’s own box stays hidden. In RealHomes, set the WalkScore section to Hide before you remove the plugin, or the theme shows an empty box that says the key is missing.

Changelog
0.1.1
- The “View on Walkably map” link now carries rel=”nofollow”, so the plugin passes no search ranking from your site through it. The credit link stays a normal link.

- First release.
