QROVA QR Codes & Girocode

Description

This plugin creates QR codes directly in the browser. Nothing is sent to a third-party server, no image files are written to your server, and nothing about your visitors is recorded.

What you can do with it

  • A code for a website, an email address or a phone number
  • Wi-Fi access to print and hang up — guests scan instead of typing the password
  • A digital business card (vCard) for trade fairs, flyers or your email signature
  • A WhatsApp contact with a prefilled message
  • An EPC payment code (Girocode) on WooCommerce orders

The payment code for invoices

With advance payment or bank transfer, customers type IBAN, amount and payment reference by hand. That is where transposed digits and missing order numbers come from, and matching payments to orders turns into manual work.

The EPC payment code per EPC069-12 solves this: the customer scans it with a banking app, and payee, IBAN, amount and payment reference are already filled in. The code appears automatically on every order that is not paid yet.

The standard is used by banks in the SEPA euro area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland for euro accounts, and others), so the code is shown only for orders in EUR.

How to place a code

As the block “QR Code” in the editor, or as a shortcode:

[qrova_qr data="https://example.com" size="200" download="yes"]

With download="yes" buttons for PNG and SVG appear. SVG scales without loss and is therefore the format print shops ask for — from a business card to a poster.

Privacy

Codes are generated locally by the bundled library qrcode-generator (MIT licence). There is no connection to an external service, no tracking and no cookies, so the plugin can be used without a cookie notice.

Static and dynamic codes

The codes created here are static: the target is part of the pattern. What is printed stays — that is reliable and free, but it cannot be changed after printing.

If you want to change the target later, or evaluate scans, you need dynamic codes with a redirect. This plugin deliberately does not do that, because it requires a server that performs the redirect. The difference is explained on the plugin page.

Third-party library

The plugin bundles qrcode-generator 1.4.4 by Kazuhiko Arase, published under the MIT licence. Both the readable source (assets/qrcode.js) and the minified build (assets/qrcode.min.js) are included, along with the licence text (assets/qrcode-LICENSE.txt). The library runs in the browser only.

FAQ

Is any data sent to an external service?

No. Codes are generated in the browser. Neither your content nor visitor data leaves your website.

Does the plugin work without WooCommerce?

Yes. WooCommerce is only needed for the payment code on orders. Every other function works independently.

Which size does a code need for printing?

A rule of thumb is one tenth of the reading distance: for 50 cm distance about 5 cm edge length. For printing use the SVG file, it stays sharp at any size.

Why does my code look different after a change?

Every content produces its own pattern. Change the text and the code changes — a code that is already printed still leads to the old target.

Can I change the target of a printed code afterwards?

Not with static codes, that is inherent to the format. Dynamic codes with a redirect are needed for that.

Which currencies does the payment code support?

The EPC standard covers euro payments inside SEPA, so the code is only displayed for orders in EUR.
