Description
Infovarious Picture Converter generates modern AVIF and WebP versions of your JPEG, PNG and GIF images and shows them to browsers that support them. Browsers that do not support these formats keep receiving your original image.
Features
- Bulk conversion by upload month, processed in small batches so it works on shared hosting.
- Optional automatic conversion of new uploads (all image sizes). It is off by default because conversion takes extra time during upload.
- Resized versions (thumbnail, medium, large and so on) are converted too, and responsive images keep their
srcsetandsizes. - Original files are never changed or deleted. Converted files are saved next to the originals (for example
photo.jpgandphoto.webp/photo.avif). - Images are only wrapped in
<picture>when a converted file really exists, so a missing copy never causes a broken image. - Works for post content, featured images and (optionally) the thumbnails of the WordPress Popular Posts widget.
- Lazy-loading friendly:
data-srcattributes and base64 placeholders are handled. - Skips backup and intermediate files created by other plugins (for example Smush and UpdraftPlus). The list can be changed with the
spcv_skip_patternsfilter. - Shows whether your server can create WebP and AVIF files.
Requirements
Conversion uses the image library that WordPress already uses (GD or Imagick). WebP and AVIF support depends on your server. The settings screen shows what is available. AVIF needs WordPress 6.5 or later and a library built with AVIF support.

FAQ
-
Are my original images changed?
-
No. Only new
.webpand.aviffiles are added next to them. -
What happens when I deactivate or delete the plugin?
-
Images are served as before. The generated
.webpand.aviffiles stay in your uploads folder; delete them manually if you do not need them. Uninstalling removes the plugin settings only. -
How do I convert new uploads automatically?
-
Turn on “Convert images automatically when they are uploaded” in Settings > Infovarious Picture Converter. WebP and AVIF copies of the full-size image and all resized versions are then created right after upload. This is off by default because AVIF conversion can take several seconds per image on slow servers. Images uploaded while it was off can be converted later with the bulk conversion.
-
Are resized versions (thumbnails, medium, large) converted?
-
Yes. Both the bulk conversion and the automatic conversion create copies for the full-size image and every resized version. Images are only switched to
<picture>when a converted copy exists, so a missing copy never breaks an image. -
Do I need .htaccess rewrite rules for the AVIF to WebP to JPEG fallback?
-
Not for images that this plugin outputs. The plugin uses a
<picture>element, so the browser itself picks AVIF first, then WebP, and otherwise the original image. No server rewrite rules are needed for these images. Images that are not output through the plugin (for example CSS background images or images written directly into a theme) are not covered; if you use server rules for those, keep them. -
Why is AVIF not supported on my server?
-
Your PHP image library (GD or Imagick) was built without AVIF support. On some servers Imagick is used by default but only GD can write AVIF. In that case turn on “Use the GD library first” in Settings > Infovarious Picture Converter; this only affects this plugin’s conversion. If neither library supports AVIF, ask your host or use WebP only.
-
Do I need .htaccess rewrite rules for the AVIF / WebP / JPEG fallback?
-
Not for images that this plugin outputs. The plugin uses the HTML
<picture>element, so the browser itself picks AVIF, then WebP, then your original image, depending on what it supports. No server rewrite rules are needed for that. Images that do not go through the plugin (for example CSS background images or images hard-coded in a theme) are not covered, so keep any rules you still need for those. -
Can I change the quality?
-
Yes. Use the
spcv_webp_quality(default 82) andspcv_avif_quality(default 50) filters.
