DocToucan

Description

DocToucan is a document library, knowledge base, and download manager for WordPress.
Every managed item has one central Document record with one primary mode:

  • Article: block-authored documentation and knowledge-base content.
  • Attachment: one file from the WordPress Media Library.
  • External URL: one validated remote resource.

Free includes central records, categories, tags, safe source controls, a searchable
Document Library, one complete authored Documentation hub and optional WooCommerce
product resources.

Library visitors can use accessible table/list and grid views, search titles, excerpts,
article content, file metadata and categories, filter by category, tag and type, sort,
paginate, preview supported Media Library formats and use truthful read/open/download
actions. The no-JavaScript baseline remains functional, while JavaScript progressively
adds live updates, modal previews and privacy-conscious aggregate action counts.

Documentation authors can nest and manually order Article Documents, curate related
files and links, and add the Documentation Hub, Search, Categories or Article Tree
blocks. Article pages automatically receive breadcrumbs, anchored heading navigation,
reading time, a documentation tree, previous/next links, related resources, aggregate
helpful/not-helpful feedback, code-copy enhancement and print-friendly output.
Article Documents use the responsive DocToucan Wide reading shell by default while the
active theme keeps its header and footer. Administrators can choose Theme Integrated
mode when a bespoke theme should retain its complete single-Document layout.

When WooCommerce is active, merchants can assign ordered public Documents to each
product. DocToucan adds an accessible Resources tab and a server-rendered Product
Resources block/shortcode. Article, Attachment and External URL Documents retain the
same central identity and reader actions. The core continues to work without
WooCommerce.

DocToucan Pro

DocToucan Pro is the paid edition for sites that need more control over document
access, presentation and day-to-day maintenance. It extends the same Document
records, so existing libraries and content remain in place when you upgrade.

  • Folder views, saved libraries, multi-select filters and bulk ZIP downloads.
  • Themes, skins, presentation packs, saved design presets and advanced CSS controls.
  • Protected file delivery with role, user and password rules, plus expiring links.
  • File versions and rollback, review dates, expiry and audit records.
  • Bulk file intake, CSV/WXR transfer and preview-first migration tools.
  • WooCommerce category and variation resources, purchaser access and account delivery.

These tools help you manage larger collections, keep documents current and control
how they are presented and shared, without duplicating your content.

Support

Use the WordPress.org support forum for the Free edition. Product documentation,
privacy information and commercial support are available at
https://wpgoplugins.com/doctoucan-docs/ and https://wpgoplugins.com/privacy-policy/.

Privacy

DocToucan includes Freemius for optional usage opt-in and, when chosen by an
administrator, licence activation, account access, checkout and paid updates. Free
users can skip usage sharing. Freemius may receive administrator name and email, site
URL, WordPress/PHP/plugin versions, locale, and active theme/plugin information for
these services. DocToucan does not send document titles, content, files, searches,
downloads, WooCommerce products or customer data.

Development

Readable DocToucan JavaScript and stylesheet source is included in src/ in the
plugin ZIP. PHP, templates and unbundled admin assets are also included in readable
form. Freemius SDK source is available at https://github.com/Freemius/wordpress-sdk.

Use a separate development copy, not a live site. With Node.js 24 and npm, run
these commands from the extracted plugin folder:

npm init -y
npm pkg set name=doctoucan
npm install –save-dev @wordpress/scripts@32.6.0
npx wp-scripts build editor/index=src/editor/index.js library/index=src/library/index.js library/view=src/library/view.js documentation/index=src/documentation/index.js documentation/view=src/documentation/view.js product-resources/index=src/product-resources/index.js

The last command is one line. It rebuilds JavaScript, CSS and dependency metadata
in build/. PHP, templates and includes/assets/ need no compilation. This source
review build does not change Documents or settings and does not replace the
Freemius release pipeline. Transitive dependencies can change, so byte-identical
output is not promised. Do not distribute generated npm dependencies or manifests.

FAQ

Does the library work without JavaScript?

Yes. Search, filters, sorting, pagination and reader actions use normal server-rendered
forms and links. JavaScript enhances the experience but is not required.

Which files can be previewed?

Media Library PDFs, images, audio and video receive a browser preview when their MIME
type is supported. Other files retain a direct download action, and external resources
open at their validated public URL.

Are Media Library files private?

No. Normal Media Library URLs remain public. DocToucan will not claim protected file
delivery until an enforced delivery controller is implemented and verified.

What does the Free documentation experience include?

One public documentation hub can combine article-content search, category landing
cards and a nested article tree. Article pages add navigation, TOC, related resources,
reading time, print styles and aggregate usefulness feedback automatically.

Does feedback store visitor data?

No user-level feedback record is created. Free stores only aggregate helpful and
not-helpful counters on the Article Document.

Will DocToucan work with my theme?

DocToucan is designed for standards-based block and classic themes. Libraries and
embedded components integrate with the active theme. Article Documents offer
DocToucan Wide, which protects the reading width and document typography without
requiring a full-width page template, plus Theme Integrated for sites that want their
theme to control the entire single-Document page. Compatibility is tested and
documented by theme family rather than promised without qualification.
