Auto Post Thumbnail

Go PRO! A premium version of the plugin has been launched with many more features – See for details

Auto post thumbnail is a plugin to generate post thumbnail from first image in post or any custom post type. If the first image doesn’t work it will automatically search for the next one and so on until the post thumbnail is inserted.

If the post thumbnail is already present, the plugin will do nothing.
If you don’t want a post thumbnail for some post with images, just add a custom field skip_post_thumb to the post and the plugin will restrain itself from generating post thumbnail.
The plugin also provides a Batch Processing capability to generate post thumbnails for already published posts. A new menu item Gen. Post Thumbnails will get added under Tools menu after this plugin is installed.

For more details, see

  1. Upload directory ‘auto-post-thumbnail’ to the ‘/wp-content/plugins/’ directory
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  3. Sorry, no more steps 🙂

no settings whatsoever, a dive into the void

the plugin just creates a button “generate thumbnails”…. no way I’m gonna press that button just like that, without knowing what’s it gonna do. Seriously, not even the possibility to set which custom-post-type you want to edit. Are you nuts?!

Ottimo plugin per mettere le immagini in evidenza in automatico. Ottimo se si inseriscono molti articoli.

Worked Well 6 Months Ago, No More

I’ve used this plugin on several education sites where I syndicate in student blog posts with Feed WordPress via their blogs RSS Feeds. This plugin worked well before for creating featured images from the first images in the syndicated posts (a copy of each post is saved to the aggregating site).

Alas, on creating a new aggregating site, this plugin no longer seems to be able to do this, and I can see the last few months of my previous site the syndicated images lack the featured images this plugin once generated.

I thought it didn’t work because the images weren’t imported, but even once I imported them the plugin didn’t add them.
