Description
ARK (Archival Resource Key) is a persistent identifier scheme that uses the syntax ark:/NAAN/name. ARCA del Mar Caribe is a WordPress plugin that turns your site into a local ARK resolver for the slash form /ark:/NAAN/name/qualifier.
Plugin owner and copyright holder: Editorial Mar Caribe.
Unlike a plain redirect, the resolver can keep the ARK identifier in the browser address bar while displaying the target resource inside an iframe. It can also issue a standards-based HTTP 302 or 303 redirect.
Features
- Public resolver rules for
/ark:/NAAN/nameand/ark:/NAAN/name/qualifier. - Two delivery modes per identifier: embedded viewer (the address bar keeps the ARK) or HTTP 302/303 redirect.
- Admin screen under Settings > ARCA del Mar Caribe to add, edit and delete identifiers.
- Edit action that changes an existing identifier’s destination URL and delivery mode without altering its NAAN, name or qualifier.
- Validation for NAAN (five digits), assigned name and qualifier segments.
- Destination URLs restricted to http and https.
- Canonical redirects disabled for ARK requests so the identifier is preserved.
- No external services, trackers or remote requests.
- Uninstall removes the stored identifiers.

FAQ
-
Which permalink structure is required?
-
A pretty permalink structure is required (for example
/%postname%/). The ARK rules are rewrite rules and do not work with the “Plain” permalink option. -
Why does the ARK URL return a 404?
-
Check that the permalink structure is not “Plain”, that the plugin was activated after the rules were added, and that the NAAN, name and qualifier match the stored record exactly. Saving the Permalinks screen once flushes the rules.
-
The embedded view is blank or shows an error
-
Some sites send
X-Frame-OptionsorContent-Security-Policyheaders that block embedding. In that case edit the identifier and choose the HTTP redirect mode instead. -
Are redirects cached?
-
No. ARK responses send no-cache headers so changes in the target URL take effect immediately.
-
Does it support multi-segment ARK suffixes?
-
This version supports one optional qualifier segment after the name (
/ark:/NAAN/name/qualifier). Additional suffix segments are not resolved. -
How do I change the destination URL of an existing ARK?
-
Go to Settings > ARCA del Mar Caribe, click Editar URL in the row of the identifier, update the URL and save. The NAAN, name and qualifier stay unchanged; only the destination and the delivery mode are updated.
-
Is the destination URL checked?
-
The URL must use http or https. Only users with the
manage_optionscapability can create or edit identifiers, and the destination is stored by the administrator, never supplied by the visitor. Because the plugin is a public resolver, the destination may point to an external host.
