Description
AltQuill Alt Text suggests alt text for images in your media library. It works with any image. When the image belongs to a WooCommerce product, it also uses the product name and attributes your store already holds.
How it works:
- When you upload an image, the plugin queues it for a suggestion.
- Media > Alt Text Review has a “Generate next 5” button that finds images with no alt text and processes them in batches (WP-CLI:
wp altquill-alt-text bulk). - The same page lists pending suggestions. You can edit the text, then Approve or Reject each one.
- By default nothing is written to an image until you approve it. Automatic publishing is a setting you must turn on yourself.
- Existing alt text is never replaced unless you tick “Overwrite existing”.
- Optionally, the plugin can also suggest an image title and caption. Both are off by default.
What a suggestion looks like:
- One sentence, under 125 characters.
- No “image of” or “picture of” at the start.
- It describes the product visible in the image.
- It uses the product name and attributes your store provides.
Languages: English and Spanish. By default the plugin follows your site language. You can change this in Settings.
Usage: the Settings page shows how many images you have used this month and your plan limit. The service supplies these numbers.
Your responsibility: the plugin produces suggested text. You remain responsible for reviewing it and for the accessibility of your site. The plugin does not make a site compliant with any law or standard.
WooCommerce is optional. Without it, the plugin works on media-library images and does not use product data.
External services
This plugin needs an external service to generate text. It does not work without one.
Service: the AltQuill API, operated by M&M Consulting Firm LLC.
Contact: hello@altquill.com
What is sent, and when:
- When an image is processed (in the background after upload, or from the bulk button), the plugin sends a copy of the image resized to at most 768 pixels when the WordPress image editor is available (otherwise the original image, up to 8 MiB), the product name and product attributes (if the image is a WooCommerce product image; otherwise the image title), the chosen language, and your API key. The plugin never sends the image’s URL.
- When you press “Refresh usage” in Settings, the plugin sends your API key to fetch your monthly usage and plan limit. Each generation response also returns the current usage.
Nothing is sent until you enter an API key in Settings.
What the service keeps:
- The image is processed in memory and is not stored.
- Text is generated on the operator’s own hardware. No third-party AI provider receives your images.
- For each request the service records: key id, request id, timestamp, language, character count, processing time and status. This is used for usage counts and billing.
- Account records include your email, plan, and a hash of your API key. Your WordPress database stores the API key so it can authenticate requests; AltQuill stores only its hash.
- Cloudflare provides HTTPS delivery. Stripe processes paid subscriptions and supplies subscription status associated with your email. The plugin sends no shopper data or analytics events.
- Generated suggestions and the most recent generation request id remain in your WordPress database for review and diagnostics. Uninstall removes plugin settings, usage cache, and review metadata; approved alt text remains.

FAQ
-
How do I get a key and what does the Free plan include?
-
Visit https://altquill.com/get-key. Your key is shown on screen once; copy it into Settings > AltQuill Alt Text. The Free plan includes 25 successful image generations per UTC calendar month. No payment card is required for a free key.
-
How do I upgrade?
-
Open https://altquill.com/get-key and enter your saved key in “Already have a key?”. The account form shows four Stripe payment links tied to that key (Starter or Pro, monthly or yearly). Complete checkout from one of those links using the same email as your key. The key upgrades automatically within 10 minutes of a completed subscription checkout. An email match alone cannot grant a paid plan. Keep using the same key. The pricing page routes you through this key page before checkout.
-
Can I recover a lost key?
-
The service cannot show the original key again because it stores only a hash. See the key page for account recovery guidance. Keep your saved key private.
-
Does this make my store ADA compliant?
-
No. The plugin suggests alt text. Alt text is one part of accessibility, and suggested text can be wrong. You are responsible for reviewing what is published and for your site’s accessibility. The plugin does not provide legal compliance or protection from claims.
-
Will it change my images without asking?
-
No. By default every suggestion waits in the Review queue until you approve it. If you turn on automatic publishing, suggestions are written to images without review. You can still edit them later.
-
Will it replace alt text I already wrote?
-
No. Images that already have alt text are skipped unless you tick “Overwrite existing”.
-
Do I need WooCommerce?
-
No. It works on any media-library image. With WooCommerce, it also uses the product name and attributes.
-
Which languages are supported?
-
English and Spanish.
-
Where are my images sent?
-
To the AltQuill API run by M&M Consulting Firm LLC. The image is processed in memory and is not stored. No third-party AI provider receives it. Contact hello@altquill.com. See “External services” above.
-
What model generates the text?
-
An open vision-language model (Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct, Apache-2.0) running on the operator’s own hardware.
-
What counts toward my monthly limit?
-
Each image the service generates a suggestion for counts as one image. Usage resets at the start of each month.
-
What happens when I reach my limit?
-
The service refuses new requests until the next month, or until you change plan. There are no overage charges.
-
Can I generate titles and captions too?
-
Yes, if you turn on those settings. Both are off by default.
