Description
Candler shows you what shoppers do on your store. Watch recordings of real visits, see where people click and how far they scroll, and find the step where your checkout loses them. Every recording is tied to what the shopper put in the cart and whether they bought, so you can go straight to the visits that cost you a sale.
This plugin connects your store to Candler. You need a Candler account (there’s a free plan) or your own Candler server.
What you get in Candler
- Session recordings, with form fields masked.
- Click and scroll heatmaps, plus rage clicks and dead clicks.
- Product and checkout funnels, with the recordings of shoppers who dropped off at each step.
- Revenue, orders and add to cart rates by product and traffic source.
- Live view of who’s on the store right now.
- Visitor profiles with your own notes and follow-ups.
What the plugin does
- Adds the Candler tracking script to every page. It loads async and never blocks rendering.
- Describes product, cart and checkout pages to the tracker using WooCommerce data, not page scraping.
- Sends add to cart, remove from cart and purchase events from your server, signed with your server key. Revenue can’t be faked from a browser, and it still counts when a shopper’s browser blocks scripts.
- Sends each purchase once, only after payment is confirmed (processing or completed), in the background with automatic retries. Candler also deduplicates by order ID, so refreshing the order confirmation page never counts an order twice.
- Works with the classic and block cart and checkout, and with High-Performance Order Storage.
- Stores only the anonymous visitor and session IDs on the order (meta keys _candler_visitor_id and _candler_session_id), so a payment confirmed later is still matched to the right visit.
- Never sends names, emails, addresses, phone numbers, payment details or order notes.
On a WordPress site without WooCommerce, the plugin adds the tracking script only.
Privacy
- An opt-out link and Global Privacy Control are respected.
- You can make tracking wait for cookie consent. The WP Consent API is supported, so compatible consent banners work without extra code.
- Logged-in shop managers and admins aren’t tracked unless you turn that off.
External services
This plugin connects to Candler, a session replay and analytics service run by Candler Analytics. It’s needed to record visits and report sales.
- The tracking script is loaded from your Analytics URL (https://app.candleranalytics.com by default, or your own Candler server). In the shopper’s browser it records page views, clicks, scrolling and session recordings, with form fields masked, and sends them to that same address.
- From your server, the plugin sends cart changes and confirmed orders to the same address: products, quantities, prices, totals, coupon codes and the anonymous visitor and session IDs. It never sends the customer’s name, email, address, phone number or payment details.
- The Test connection button on the settings page sends your tracking ID and server key to that address to check them.
Nothing is sent until you save a tracking ID.

Installation
- Install and activate the plugin.
- Sign up at https://candleranalytics.com/ and add your store as a website.
- In WordPress, open Settings, Candler. Paste the tracking ID and server key from your Candler dashboard (Settings, Installation), save, then click Test connection.
- Clear your page cache: a caching plugin first, then any host or CDN cache.
- If a performance plugin delays or combines scripts, exclude tracker.js.
- Remove any Candler snippet you added by hand, so the script isn’t loaded twice.
FAQ
-
Do I need a Candler account?
-
Yes. The plugin sends data to Candler, where you watch recordings and see reports. There’s a free plan. You can also run your own Candler server and point the plugin at it.
-
Will it slow my store down?
-
The tracking script loads async, so it never blocks the page. Session recording loads separately, after the page is up. Cart and order events are sent from your server in the background, so shoppers don’t wait on them.
-
Does it work with a caching plugin or CDN?
-
Yes. The tracking script is the same on every page, so cached pages are fine. Clear the cache once after you save your settings. Cart and checkout pages aren’t cached by WooCommerce.
-
That depends on where you and your shoppers are. If you need consent first, tick “Wait for cookie consent before tracking”. Banners that support the WP Consent API work automatically. Others can call candler.consent(true).
-
Can I run it next to another analytics tool?
-
Yes. It uses its own cookies, script name and order meta, so it doesn’t conflict with Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar or Lucky Orange.
-
What happens when I delete the plugin?
-
Its settings are removed, and any purchase sends still waiting are cancelled. The anonymous visitor and session IDs stay on past orders. Your data in Candler stays until you delete it there.
