WordPress Setup and Migration (2 posts)

    Hello,

My aim is to take my static html .com site and convert it into WordPress. Due to the terrible code, I am unable to do an easy conversion; I must manually reconstruct the site in WordPress (I've consulted several coding experts and they concur).

To achieve this, I bought a .info domain so I could setup the new WordPress site there. Currently, I am in the process of reconstructing all the pages (over 300)of my static site into the new WordPress site at the new domain.

    My question:

When I migrate the new .info WP site over to the old domain name, will I be able to convert and keep the urls & file names the same? The old domain has aged 6 years, and traffic is growing nicely.

Is this a logical way of doing this? The reconstruction will take 1-2 months; so I need a way to develop and test the new site discreetly on the side before converting it to the old, target domain name.

    I'd appreciate any input/suggestions.

    Thanks!

    John

It's usually best to avoid hard coding links into your theme for this exact reason. Rather than using the full url for links, you can use template tags to reference the site URL set in your database. Here's a link with some info on how to do this, with a list of useful tags at the bottom. http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/bloginfo Hope this helps!
