problem with mail() function

    after upgrading to wordpress 2.9, I couldn’t use smtp mail. And when I switched to mail() function I got this error message:

    The e-mail could not be sent.
    Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…

    this is classic problem. why does it end with “oh so fine” version?
