i.e. files I should be able to see in the server?
Also, I currently do not have database caching on, just page, object, minify and browser. Will database caching improve much more? Not sure why I do not have it on (someone set it up for me).

You have to try various settings for your server, but the first thing to do is understand how the default settings work.
