    I am attempting to install WordPress onto my 1 & 1 hosted Developers account. I have already created my 2 MySQL databases, and am attempting to run the install.php but am getting the following error message when attempt to run it.

    Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /homepages/4/d109092127/htdocs/wordpress_reviews/wp-includes/functions-formatting.php on line 498

    And this is line 498 of that file.

    $newtext = str_replace("< !--","<!--",$newtext);

    I have not changed anything in this film, what is going on? I can't even get this to install, and I am following 1&1's directions.

    My 1 & 1 server is running PHP 4.4.2 and MySql 4.0.25 and Appace 1.3.33, so I should be compatible.

    I talked to 1&1 they say their is a scripting error in the latest version of WordPress which won't let it install. I tend to no believe them, as obviously others have gotten it working.
