   I presume I cannot upload a custom theme ie http://templatic.com/freethemes/coming-soon/ to a .com wordpress site?

   You cannot upload any themes to wordpress.com sites. Also, these forums are for self-hosted WordPress sites only, so please try asking any further questions on http://en.forums.wordpress.com/
