The sitemap link provided by you takes to your home page, not 404. Try uploading a sitemap to your root.

i tried that, says not to actually create a physical file on the beta release
although when i turn permalinks off it works

Got it to work with adding rewrites but submitting it to google fails

I’ve also the same problem:
http://www.site.com/sitemap.xml works perfectly
while
http://site.com/sitemap.xml doesent work
My guess is that the problem lies in wordpress that in the 2 nd case does not redirect the call to the google-sitemap-generator plugin
