Login / password question about encryption

I know the WP login password is encrypted on the server.

When I login, is the password sent encrypted or plaintext?

I’d assume encrypted, just wanted to check, just read something about how it’s fairly easy for someone to intercept plaintext passwords if you’re wi-fi’ing at, say, Starbucks.
