Error Message: The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme.

    Hey all. My problem is two-fold: I install a theme and am told that the theme has uploaded successfully. However, when I go to my themes, it does not appear in my list of active and inactive themes!

    Worst of all, when I get the prompt to activate my newly downloaded theme, I get this error message: The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme.

    When I go back to try and upload my theme again, it tells me that I’ve already uploaded it!

    What in wordpress’s name is going on, and how can I upload my theme? I’ve tried this process with a few different themes, all with the same result.

    PS I’ve reinstalled the latest version of wordpress, deactivated all my plug ins…and it’s still a no go:(

    You have a broken, incomplete or incompatible theme. Try deleting it from wp-content/themes using FTP and using another theme.

    Dear Esmi,
    Thank you for taking the time to respond. Please don’t shoot me for asking this probably stupid question: Where is wp-content?

    Well, I’ll try my best to delete the offending theme and try to install a new one!

    It’s a sub-folder inside the folder where you installed WordPress.

    Dear esmi,
    Again, thank you for your response.

    At the risk of sounding idiotic: I have looked everywhere on my actual hard drive and in my wordpress dashboard for said promised folders; I am not sure where they live. Again, sorry to be so slow.

    I did try to delete the theme Twenty-Ten from the themes menu, with the intent to install it afresh; however, even though the prompt told me that I had deleted it, when I went to reinstall Twenty-Ten, it said I already had it installed.

    If you could tell me where these folders live, I would be so grateful.

    You have to look in the remote server that is hosting your WordPress site. Try asking your hosts if they have a file management application that you can use.

    Thank you very much Esmi for your patience with a newbie like me. I will look into this and report back! Hopefully this will work!

    By the way, the active theme I have right now is Twenty Eleven 1.3, and only other inactive theme is Twenty Ten 1.3. Do you reckon it is one or both of the themes that are corrupted?

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/twentyeleven
