Hi, My blog is finally up.

what are te "meta" tags in the left sidebar for? A lot of them don't seem to work? How do I get a functional RSS feed? Can I get rid of the other tags? (xfn, valid xhtml, etc.) do I need them?

RSS A link to your automatic Really Simple Syndication feed, which makes it possible to subscribe to a stream of information and automatically get your latest post in a feed reader.
Comments RSS is the same but for your comments
Valid XHTML is a link to a validation service that will go through the current page to check if it is valid XHTML.
XFN is a link to the XHTML Friends Network - go there and find out!
wp is a link to the WordPress site with lots of good information on everything WordPress'y

When I click on "RSS" I get a page that says:
"This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below."
across the top, and then it says:
<!-- generator="wordpress/2.0" -->
-
<rss version="2.0">
-
<channel>
Does it do that because I'm the site owner, and work differently for outside readers? I'll ask some other people to check those links.
Those links are NOT for humans to click and read :)
They are for machines/software that can read the "feeds". They are exactly as they are supposed to be.

So if someone wants to subscribe, should they click the RSS link? Or should they use Bloglines or a similar aggragator? Is there a simple subscription plug-in that I could add to the site for people to use. I know other rock climbers and skiers who are as ignorant of blogging software and use as I am, but who would like to read about climbing!
How do I get the blog updates to them?

Usually people that subscribe to feeds do it with a specialized feed reader, that gets and interprets the feed and presents the latest of your blog posts with the titles as links and maybe with some excerpts of the posts.
The user can then click on the link and get the whole post text.
If youse Firefox, you and anyone can see your feed directly in the browser using live bookmarks. Better yet to my opinion is to use Sage, a Firefox extension, presenting the last entries in a feed in full directly in one browser window.
