WordPress does not use CGI files, nor would it have any way of affecting your cgi-bin folder. You’ll have to contact your hosting provider. This is not a WordPress issue.

Thanks very macmanx. I thought it was odd, but here is what happened.
I posted this morning. Comments seemed to work fine.
I went and deleted some of this stuff in the cgi-bin. None of marked “wp” so I figured I would be safe.
Just in case, after I had deleted all the “loose” stuff, I went back and now, comments do not work.
Could there be any other cause?
And if I might ask, what should ask my host? I mean, is there something specific that I would need that might suddenly disappear? Could it even be a browser issue? I use explorer at the office running on a windows machine. AT home I use a mac running osx and use firefox and safari.
Thanks again for your blazingly fast response and any follow up wisdom you might provide.
The problem you’re seeing with the comments link is that there is no ‘comments’ anchor on your single post pages until after a comment exists. This would have to be changed in the theme’s comments.php template. Nothing to do with missing cgi files.

I’ve found the answer. It was, as Kafka suggested in the php file.
I VERY much appreciate your responses especially so quickly.
I’m going to add this comment not to rub your nose in it or anything, but to once again point out how important it is to keep a BACKUP of your ENTIRE site. I have no less than 3 full backups of my site on 3 different forms of media.
I’ll tell you now, beening so anal retentive about backing up my site(s) has saved my bacon more than once. If you don’t have a backup, you’re BEGGING for bad things to happen.
And this is a good a time as any to remind everyone that next week is WORDPRESS BACKUP WEEK. Back it up, folks! 😉
