Afraid to update to 2.8

    Hi all,

    I’ve done so much work on my site that I am afraid to update to WP 2.8. A while back, I suggested there be a push-button immediate site replication tool (set the directory, FTP settings, etc), that could be used to make completely current test environments.

    Is there a way for me to do that?

    My WP install is in a directory called community.

    If I were to just copy everything into a directory called “test,” would I have to do anything else to be able to test the install?
    If I’m at the same “directory level” would all of the “pointers” in the code work?

    Basically, I don’t find it wise to update to 2.8 without doing so in a test environment first.

    Suggestions as to how to make one?
    Suggestions about update procedures and “best practices” for updating WP?

    the problem with site replication is in your test folder you would be making actual changes to your database on your live copy also.

    why not just do a fresh 2.8 install in a folder – copy modified files and themes over – add same plugins, etc – and test it that way?

    Because that would take a really really really long time. I think the automatic backup/test environment generator should create a new database and complete install at the push of a button.

    The way the plugin would work is:

    1) Set all FTP and DB settings
    2) Press “replicate”
    3) Wait and then you have an exact copy of your WP site installed at a new location with a separate DB.
    4) Breathe a sigh of relief…do all your testing in the test environment, keep the replication as a backup…etc.
