Will WordPress run on a 150Mhz server with 150 MB RAM?

    I work for a small but growing community newspaper and we use a WordPress for our newspaper’s online version. The site has been quite slow in general, especially in recent days. Our traffic has also picked up. We’re using a DreamHost shared hosting plan and are considering DreamHost’s private servers in order to speed things up a bit (http://dreamhostps.com/). However, we do not wish to spend more money than necessary. DreamHost PS’s lowest and cheapest option is a virtual private server with 150MB of RAM and 150 MHz CPU. Is that enough to run WordPress? We plan to upgrade to 2.5 soon. We have thousands of articles (posts) stored in the database, and the front page pulls articles in from multiple sections (like a typical newspaper site does).

    But I know nothing about servers and their capacity. Do you think the 150MB/150Mhz deal is a good one for WordPress? On days in which we publish new articles, we use almost 1 gig of bandwidth.

    That has nothing to do with anything, really.

    That said, Ill be honest and tell you thats a shit box and a shit set up. I am, in fact, surprised that they would offer that. Unless they were giving it away, I wouldnt take that, and even then, I wouldnt host any kind of dynamic web sites on it.

    Sounds like a not-so-clever way to make some extra cash of those old towers they have.

    Thanks for the reply. This is a Virtual Private Server, not an actual server box. You still share the server box with other users, but each user’s portion acts like a separate machine.

    That being said, is it still not a good deal?

    is it free?

    I dont care if its virtual, or real. The outcome is the same.

    If you want a good indicator of what to expect, I would ask around on their own support forums, try to get in touch with someone using that set up. Get their URL, and load a cpl pages — Apache 2.x (assuming its what is used) is going to run dirt slow, Ill betcha.
