Should I be worried that I don’t have a 404 page?
-
Normally when I enter an incorrect url, my site goes to the page with a 404 message on it. Recently I tried replacing the info in 404.php with a picture but nothing happened. So I put back the same exact info I replaced but the 404 message doesn’t show up. You can enter any crazy url but it just stays on the main page. The thing is, nothing is wrong with anything else on the site, I just want to know if the 404 message is needed.

it’s not required, but it’s generally a good idea to have — even for SEO purposes.
Oh, well I have a really good picture I want to use. I just can’t figure out what when wrong. Is there a way to edit what people see when a 404 error pops up?

Before anyone asks, yes I checked the codex but it tells you what you already know. In my case, I just want my message to appear.

Is the 404.php file in your theme folder?
Yes.
Sorry, I have to doubt that. WP displays the index ONLY when there is no 404.php file in the theme folder.

Hello, anyone in there?
You asked me if I have 404.php in my theme folder and there is, I’m not blind and I know how to spell.
Bump.
Is there a way I could download a new 404.php?

Just make a new page and save it as 404.html or php or shtml or whatever you want. FTP to your space and you’re done. I did that to create my custom 404 page at http://wargamingforums.com/thisdontexist
html – Doesn’t work
php – Doesn’t work
shtml – Doesn’t work
