Activating email notification

I’ve got the options in my admin panel set to email me whenever anyone posts a comment / one is held for moderation, yet I receive no email. I designed my theme based off of the default theme, so I’m using that comments.php file. I’ve played around with the wp_notify functions, with no result. Do I need to define a mail server somewhere?
