LinkFix – Broken Link Checker

Description

Most broken link checkers run inside WordPress: they crawl from your own server, fill your database and slow your site.
LinkFix does the checking on its own servers. Your site only receives normal page visits, one page at a time,
following your robots.txt.

For every broken link LinkFix shows:

  • where it is: the posts and pages that carry it, and the words people click;
  • why it is broken: not found (404), gone (410), a server that keeps failing, or a site that no longer answers;
  • the fix: the closest live page on your own site to point it to, or a saved copy in the Internet Archive for another site’s page that is gone.

Click Apply and LinkFix replaces the link in every post and page that contains it, through WordPress’s own editor
API, keeping a revision you can restore.

No false alarms: a link counts as broken only after it fails twice. Sites that block robots (such as LinkedIn) are
listed as “could not check”, never as broken.

Free: a full check of up to 100 pages and 600 links, any time.
Weekly watch, $6/month: a re-check every week of up to 500 pages and 3,000 links, and an email only when a link breaks, with its fix.

External services

This plugin relies on the LinkFix service (https://linkfix.agentsox.com), run by AgentsOX, to check links. The
checking itself happens on that service, not on your server.

What is sent, and when:

  • When an administrator clicks “Check my site now” in Tools LinkFix, the plugin sends your site’s public home
address (home_url) to https://linkfix.agentsox.com/api/scan. The service then reads your public pages, one at a
time and following robots.txt, and checks the links on them.
  • While a report is in progress or shown, opening Tools LinkFix asks the service for that report’s progress and
results (https://linkfix.agentsox.com/api/scan//step). Only the report id is sent.

No login, post content, user data or database content is sent. Nothing is sent in the background or before you click.
The service keeps the report (links, status codes, the pages they are on) under an unguessable id, and a daily hash of
the requesting IP address to apply the free limit.

The optional weekly watch is a subscription to the LinkFix service, paid on linkfix.agentsox.com through Polar
(https://polar.sh), the merchant of record (terms: https://polar.sh/legal/master-services-terms, privacy:
https://polar.sh/legal/privacy-policy). Every feature of this plugin works without it.

Installation

  1. Install and activate the plugin.
  2. Open Tools LinkFix and click “Check my site now”.
  3. Reload the page after a minute to see the broken links and apply the fixes.

FAQ

Does it slow my site down?

No. The checking runs on LinkFix’s servers and reads one page at a time, following your robots.txt and its Crawl-delay.

Can I undo a fix?

Yes. Every change is a normal post update with a revision; restore it from the post’s revision history.

Does it work on sites that are not WordPress?

Yes, the free check works for any public website at https://linkfix.agentsox.com.
