Description
Rashid ALT Coverage Manager reads the real structure of your pages (Gutenberg blocks, Classic Editor HTML and Elementor layouts), groups images under the section heading they belong to, and lets you write ALT text exactly where it is shown.
Everything below is free. Nothing is locked.
ALT Coverage Dashboard
- Total Images, With ALT and Missing ALT cards. Click a card and the matching images open right below the cards, grouped by page and section.
- Edit ALT text inline. Each save is read back from the database before it is reported as successful; the counts update and finished sections and pages disappear from the Missing list.
- Decorative images (empty ALT on purpose – role=”presentation”, aria-hidden, a “decorative” class, tiny images or file names like “spacer”) are shown separately and never counted as missing.
- Search across page titles, section headings, file names and ALT text. Pagination keeps large sites fast.
Page-wise ALT Manager
- Searchable page tabs. Only sections that contain images are shown, each with its detected heading.
- “This page only” ALT (changes just that image on that page) or “Media Library” ALT (shared by every page using the image).
Bulk ALT Manager
- Use each section’s heading as ALT text for its images: preview first, confirm, batch processing with progress, cancel and resume.
- Shared Media Library images used under different headings are reported as conflicts and left unchanged.
ALT Quality & Duplicates
- Quality Checker flags ALT text that may need review: file names, generic words (“image”), “image of…” prefixes, very long text, repeated words, keyword lists and meaningless text. Every rule can be switched off or tuned – these are hints, not verdicts.
- Duplicate ALT Detector lists identical ALT text used by several images, with counts and pages, so you can review each one in context.
ALT Health Score
- A 0–100 score per page and for the whole site, with the formula explained on screen. It measures detected ALT text only – it is not an accessibility certification or an SEO ranking score.
History & Undo
- Every change is recorded (page, image, previous and new ALT, storage method, user, time, operation). Filter by page, image, date or operation, undo a single change, or restore the last bulk update. Undo never overwrites a newer edit. Retention is configurable.
Automatic new image detection
- When content is saved or images are uploaded, only the changed pages are re-scanned in the background (WP-Cron). Saving is never slowed down and existing ALT text is never changed automatically.
Safety
- Admin-only: nothing is added to your public pages (no frontend scripts, styles or markup).
- Capability, nonce and per-post permission checks on every request.
- Only the
altattribute of the selected image changes; the rest of the content stays byte-for-byte the same. Content saves create normal WordPress revisions. - Page builders that store layouts outside the editor content (Beaver Builder, Bricks, Oxygen, Brizy, Thrive) are detected and limited to Media Library mode, so nothing is written where it would not take effect. CSS background images are shown as unsupported (they cannot have ALT text).
An optional, separately distributed Pro add-on can add tools to the “Pro Tools” tab. This plugin works completely without it.
Privacy
The plugin does not send any data to external services and does not track users.
Installation
- Plugins Add New Upload Plugin, choose
smart-image-alt-manager.zip, then Install Now and Activate. (Or search the plugin directory, once listed.) - Open Smart ALT Manager in the admin menu.
- On the dashboard, click Scan website once. After that, changes are detected automatically.
FAQ
-
Does it change my theme or public pages?
-
No. It only adds an admin screen. ALT text you save is stored in your content or the Media Library, exactly as if you edited it in WordPress.
-
What is the difference between “This page only” and “Media Library”?
-
“This page only” edits the
altattribute of that image in that page’s content. “Media Library” edits the attachment’s ALT, which WordPress, Elementor image widgets, galleries and featured images use wherever the image appears. -
Which editors and builders are supported?
-
Gutenberg core blocks, the Classic Editor and Elementor (Text Editor, HTML, Image, Image Box, Gallery and Carousel widgets) were tested. Images inside third-party blocks can be updated in Media Library mode. Other builders are detected and handled safely in Media Library mode.
-
Will bulk updates overwrite my existing ALT text?
-
Not by default. “Update only images with missing ALT text” is the default, and you always see a preview first. Every bulk run can be restored.
-
Does the plugin add database tables?
-
Yes, three small tables (scan index, image index and change history) so that large sites stay fast. They are removed on uninstall if you keep the default setting. Your ALT text is never removed.
-
Is the plugin translation-ready and RTL-friendly?
-
Yes. All strings use the
smart-image-alt-managertext domain, and ALT inputs support right-to-left text.

Changelog
1.3.1
- WordPress.org submission name/slug, text domain and contributors updated.
1.00
- New: Pro Tools tabs “Background Images ALT” and “No-Meaningful Name Images” (Pro) use the page title as ALT only when you click Update; counters show how many images still need ALT. This plugin outputs the saved background ALT on the front end (role=”img”/aria-label on image-only elements and JSON-LD) – nothing is added automatically.
- New: Settings Uninstall now offers two choices, “Save data” (default) or “Remove data”, for what happens when the plugin is deleted. Deactivating never removes anything.
- After an ALT change, Elementor’s rendered-element cache of the affected page is cleared so the new ALT shows at once.
- Version number changed to 1.00.
1.3.0
- New: Bulk ALT Manager “Update ALT Tags Using Image Names”. Lists Media Library images with missing or empty ALT text, shows the ALT made from each file name (blue-cotton-shirt.jpg Blue Cotton Shirt), lets you select images (or all of them) and updates them in small batches after confirmation. Existing ALT text is never overwritten; file names without meaningful words are skipped with a reason. Every change is logged in History (“Bulk – image names”) and can be undone one by one or as a whole run.
- No other changes.
1.2.0
- Changed: deleting the plugin now keeps your data by default. Settings, scan index, change history and backups are only removed if an administrator ticks “Remove plugin settings, scan index and change history when the plugin is deleted” in Settings. Because 1.1.0 switched this on automatically, it is switched off once during the update; tick it again if you really want data removed on delete.
- Fixed: on some databases (e.g. SQLite) deleting the plugin with data removal switched on could also remove the Pro add-on’s license records. Option names are now matched exactly.
- Deactivating and re-activating the plugin keeps every setting (unchanged behaviour, now documented in the code).
1.1.0
- New: ALT Quality Checker with configurable rules.
- New: Duplicate ALT Detector.
- New: ALT Health Score (site and page) with documented formula.
- New: History & Undo for every change, with filters and retention setting; bulk backups from 1.0.0 are migrated automatically.
- New: Automatic detection of new and changed content in the background; the dashboard reads a stored index instead of scanning on every visit.
- New: Recently uploaded images without ALT on the dashboard.
- New: Extension hooks for add-ons; “Pro Tools” tab.
- Improved: Right-to-left text support in ALT fields.
1.0.0
- First release: dashboard, page-wise manager, bulk updates with preview and restore, settings, About Developer.
